Audience Uses and Gratifications

The audience of my music magazine would have many reasons why they would pick up the magazine and read through it, some would look through it to find out information such as relevant and current events and conditions that are around the reader, and with that information they can learn new things about artists or music through reading the articles which leads to them gaining a sense of security through knowing about something.

The audience may also buy the magazine to find ways to model themselves, by reading the magazine they find themselves comfortable listening to a new genre of music or listening to a new artist. The magazine may be bought for a way of social interaction, to find out about an artist's life and gain an insight from it which creates social empathy which can be used in the watercooler moment as part of a conversation with friends.
People may purchase the magazine to escape from their day to day lives and issues, and they may find it relaxing to read or they may simply read the magazine to pass the time.

Defining the Audience

From the results of my questionnaire:
My target audience is:

  • Female
  • Between the ages of 14 - 17
  • Which like the colours of Red and Black
  • Whose favourite genre is Pop Music.
  • Who are mostly interested in the artists within the magazine
  • Who rarely purchase a music magazine
  • But who are willing to pay between £2.01 and £3
  • And are willing to purchase a magazine monthly.

Conventions from Questionnaire

By conducting a questionnaire, I was able to find out what conventions I should use for my music magazine. The people I asked in my questionnaire were mostly females, and everyone that answered the questionnaire was between the ages of 14 and 17 so this should be my target audience which I should aim to meet.
I also was able to find out that the two most popular colours from the sample were Red and Black, so they will be the colours used mostly by the magazine and in the masthead. Also this is beneficial to me as red and black stand against each other.

From the questionnaire it should that 50% of the people that took part said that their favourite genre of music was Pop music, so this should be a genre that I make sure I cover within my music magazine pages, also 44% of the people that took part said that the reason they buy music magazines is for the artists featured inside them, because the most popular favourite genre was pop I should include a pop artist in my magazine pages.

From the section of the question that was focused on prices and purchases, a huge 63% said that they never buy a single music magazine within a month, but the price they are willing to pay 44% said they would be willing to pay between £2.01 to £3 which is cheap in comparison to other music magazines on the shelves. 44% said that they would also like a music magazine that released monthly, in contrast to one released weekly or fortnightly.

Action Plan

By having an action plan it will allow me to make sure that I have completed all items and tasks for my coursework but also allow me to estimate how much time I will need to complete each individual item and also will give me a guideline of what needs to still be completed.

I aim to complete all research within a week, this includes researching about the genre and gathering first and second hand research.

Research:
Week One:
  • Research the Pop genre by looking at magazines that focus on the genre, and different artists that come under the genre. I will also look at how Pop artists distribute their music and how they present themselves in different forms of media.
  • I will also look at the artists websites and album covers to see how although they are in the same genre of music, but each stand out individually.
  • I will also put together a questionnaire with the aim of collecting data on music magazines so I get an idea of what my music magazine should be like and the conventions which should be used but to also get an opinion that is different to mine by asking different people.
Week Two:
  • After gathering information from the questionnaire I plan to collate the information into different graphs to present the data, so then I can work on defining my target audience for my magazine. Then assigning the audience uses and gratifications.
  • Then I plan to compare and look at 3 different magazine front covers and contents pages and analyse and annotate any key conventions I see.
  • I then plan to carry out an investigation into how magazines are distributed and sold and who would possibly be interested in distributing and selling my magazine.
  • I then am going to create a profile for my magazine with information regarding it's price, profile and it's sales location.
Planning:
Week Three:
  • I will plan the overall layout of the cover, contents and page spread, deciding on what form my masthead should take, and what the layouts should be for all my pages and then creating mock versions of each page.
  • Then I need to take original images after planning them, then choose 5 to go in my magazine then edit, annotate and analyse each of them then explain why I chosen these images to be placed into my magazine.
Week Four:
  • I need to explain the technology used in taking and editing the images and how I was creative and innotave when taking the images.
  • I then need to take audience feedback after letting them see my magazine cover, then adjusting the cover after taking feedback from them.
Construction:
Week Four:
  • Create the final versions of my magazine front cover, contents page, and double spread.
Evaluation:
Week Four:
  • Write up answers to the answers to these questions:
    • In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge the forms and conventions of real media products?
    • How does your media product represent particular social groups?
    • What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why?
    • Who would be the audience of your media product?
    • How did you attract/address your audience?
    • What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
    • Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Things I Would Change In My Preliminary Task

If I had to go back and change anything on my work, it would be the original list with dates on telling me when I should go and do different tasks, but I didn't really give myself enough time to do any of them so I was behind.

Also I would have improved the magazine front cover and contents by reducing the white space on both of the pages and by making sure that the images covered all white areas on both pages. Another I would also change would be the font, the font Calibri although it is very clear and easy to read looks too simple so I would change it to a serif font like Times New Roman.

I changed some of the colours on the images I took to make them look better but it created unrealistic skin tones and some of the models in the pictures I took looked like they had fake tan on so the pictures weren't that realistic as they should have looked due to me changing the colour settings and the colour tones.
